Karlskrona – a World Heritage
The naval city of Karlskrona was included on the World Heritage List in 1998. UNESCO noted that “Karlskrona is an exceptionally well preserved example of a European naval base, and although its design has been influenced by similar undertakings it has in turn acted as a model for comparable installations … and of those that remain, Karlskrona is the most complete and well preserved”.
There was ship building and engineering of the utmost rank during the 17th and 18th centuries. Most of the buildings in the naval yard are still preserved and can be viewed even today.
The festival’s motto is ”world music in world heritage” and one of our goals is to be part of bringing Karlskrona’s fantastic world heritage to life. This we are doing e g through letting several world-heritage buildings host the festival’s concerts and in connection with each concert we link the music in question to the history of Karlskrona.
